The screen showed “Jasmine Mysore calling”.
I felt like I was staring at the screen for ages. I was unable to decide whether to tap the red button or the green one. “Take life as it comes!” My policy!
I pressed the green button.
“Hello”, I told in a serious tone.
“Hey Rubesh, I’m really so sorry for not having attending your calls or not texting”, she said.
“It’s OK”, I lied “What happened? What had kept you busy?”
“I’ll explain all that some other day”, she replied.
Some other day? I am not going to talk to her after this!
“OK, I’m at the bus station and I’m returning to Mysore”, I said.
“Yeah, I got your message. I’m not coming today. I’m taking a leave tomorrow and will only return tomorrow night. Hey, my mom wants me downstairs. Talk to you later. Good night. Safe journey”, she said.
“OK. Good ni…” the call got disconnected!
Great!!! What a conversation! I wasn’t getting head nor tail with what was going on at her side. It was very obvious that her mom calling was a fake excuse. But why didn’t she want to talk to me? In that case, she could have avoided calling me in the first place. Girls, we will never understand them!
It was then I took a decision that I am not going to contact her until she does. My bus arrived right on time, when it struck 9:30 pm on the clock. I texted Emily and Meera saying, I just got into the bus. They had already informed me that they got into their bus at 6:30 pm from Ernakulam.
I reached Mysore by 5:15 am. Emily and Meera were waiting for me near the bus station. We got an auto rickshaw to the Infosys campus.
Then we got back to the Infosys routine. Wake up, morning classes, afternoon assignments, evening waste time, night sleep, morning wake up…
Even though there wasn’t any communication between Jasmine and me for two days, it was not that I forgot her totally. I used to think of her every now and then console myself that she was terribly busy and still waiting for a missed call.
I wanted to tell about my experiences to someone. But whom to tell to, I didn’t know. Some time back a friend of mine, Munni, asked me whether I never fell for any girl till now. I asked her what lead her to ask me like that. She said that she just asked. I told, like any other boy I had crushes on many girls!
I thought Munni was the person that I should talk to. Coincidence or not, we happened to stumble upon the same topic once again. I narrated all about my experiences. She told me I was in love.
“Shut up. I hardly even know her! I am in love!” I mocked sarcastically.
“See Rubesh, I don’t know what’s happening on her side, but you are in love”, she told.
“No ways, not love, may be an infatuation. Love is too serious a word for this.” I replied.
“If I have to fall in love with some girl, I have to know her pretty well, I must understand her…” I continued.
“So there is a chance that you may fall in love with her?” she asked.
“See, we both are from different religions. Not that I have a problem with that, but she or her family may have problems with that. This is not going to work out”, I told.
“You are just assuming things. You just told that you hardly know her, then how can you conclude this?” she asked.
“I don’t know that. But that’s what’s going to happen”, I replied.
“Give me your phone”, she asked.
Little did I know that giving my phone to her was going to change the course of this story.
She sent a message from my phone to Jasmine “Hey, how ru? Can I talk to you now…?”
She showed me the message. I was like “What the hell? What will she think about me now?”
I was just hoping that the message sending fails. And just as I stared at my screen, it showed “Delivered: Jasmine Mysore”.
Damn!!!
“I’ll kill you if something goes wrong”, I said to Munni.
Five minutes later my phone beeped. Have you ever experienced your heart in your mouth? I was experiencing it right now.
“1 new message”. I pressed the show button. I never knew my phone was so slow!
Phew! Everything returned to normal as I discovered it was a message from another friend. Munni was smirking all the while.
“You got saved this time”, I told her.
In another five minutes another message arrived. This time I wasn’t as tensed as before. It was from Jasmine.
I told Munni, “You get ready to die”.
The message read: “Hey, im good. Sure u can call.”
Silence! Pin drop silence!
Munni grabbed the phone from my hand.
“Thank me”, she told.
“What thank? What will I call and talk? I’m not calling her!” I exclaimed.
“If you don’t call her now, she will sense something fishy”, she told.
“I’ll just tell her the truth that it was you who had sent the message”, I told.
“Trust me, then she will never talk to you; ever again”, she told.
I was left with no other choice other than to call her.
“OK. I’ll call. But what will I talk about?” I enquired.
“Just call her, the conversation will follow by itself”, she replied.
I called her up. We started the conversation on a lighter note talking about family and return journey. After that she told that she was really sorry for not responding the other day. Now here was my chance to know what actually happened the other day. But in such situations I usually abstain myself from asking too many questions.
“What actually happened the other day?” I asked.
“Eh… You know, that day, eh… I was kinda really busy. And eh… I had left my phone at home. So actually I wasn’t getting any of your calls or messages. I saw all of them at night and then called you then”, she said.
Somehow, I felt that she was lying.
“Oh it’s all right. I was just a bit kind of worried wondering what was happening”, I replied.
Though I had lots to ask about that day, I didn’t.
“You were worried about me?” she asked.
Damn, did I just say out that to her? Make up something right now!
“You see, you were not attending any calls, not replying, so I just got a bit confused”, I said.
After a few more dialogues the conversation got over. Munni was glaring at me. I looked at her and asked “What?”
“I am ready”, she said.
“For what?” I asked.
“I thought you were going to kill me”, she said.
I looked at her and smiled then we both broke into laughter. I thanked her after narrating the phone conversation.
“Shut up idiot. No need of thank you. I’m feeling so happy for you now. You were blushing all throughout the call. I’ll be the happiest person once you both become one”, she said.
“Not going to happen”, I said.
But she was very sure that we would. To be frank, even I hoped so, knowing very well that it would never happen. I was very much delighted after that phone conversation with Jasmine.
From then on communication between us was strong. It was four days after this that she messaged me that she has something to confess. I called her. But she cut the call. Then she texted that told she was more comfortable texting what she has to say. I agreed to it.
“De other day I had lied 2 u dat I dint take my phone wit me when I wnt 2 de city. I was purposely but half-heartedly avoiding u. U c, many boys come make friendship wit me 4 de sole purpose of flirtin. I dont like such guys. I knew u were nt of dat type but I couldnt take a chance. Sume1 who wantd 2 flirt would never come bak 2 me if I dint respond 2 him 4 a few days. But u msgd me the other day n on phone u told dat u were worried about me. Dat really was touching. Im sorry again.”
She sat and typed all that??? Whoa…!
I replied “Hey, its okay. Thers nothin wrong in wat u did. U were just being sure. Its all well n gud.”
Well, I don’t know what I was feeling then. At least she told out the truth.
“Im happy dat u consider me as a friend… Havent u?” I asked.
“Yes, indeed, a very gud friend” she replied.
And thus, all thanks to Munni, the seeds that would grow out to be a very strong friendship (or even more?) were sown.
